March 21-22, 1998:
Attend the birth of a stamp.
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
I'm recording this at the first day ceremony for the
Flowering Trees stamps, which was held Thursday. The five
new stamps were issued at the Mega-Event show in New York
City, which is sponsored by the Postal Service, Stamp
Dealers Association and the American Philatelic Society.
When most new stamps are issued, the Postal Service holds
a ceremony commemorating the event. Speakers will talk
about the significance of the stamp and the subject of
it, and sometimes there will be entertainment relevant
to the new issues. However, since Flowering Trees don't
dance or sing, the only entertainment here was the
National Anthem.
Afterwards, collectors will buy the new stamps, put them
on special envelopes and get them canceled with special
postmarks. Those are called first day covers.
Most ceremonies are open to the public free of charge,
and held mid-morning. You can find out about upcoming
events in your area in the weekly stamp newspapers or
n the Internet: Check the U-S stamp program listings,
and call the local postmaster to ask about the ceremony.
And that's stamp collecting this week;
I'm Lloyd de Vries, CBS News.
