Stamps For Ronald Reagan.
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
Some of the former president's supporters are calling for currency and stamps with his
image on them. When it comes to postal honors, though, that's automatic for a former
president: The U-S issues a commemorative stamp on his next birthday.
Even Richard Nixon, who resigned from office, got a stamp, although it was delayed a
few months because of an impending rate change.
The only delay likely for Ronald Reagan would be because his next birthday falls on a
Sunday, so the stamp may be issued on Monday, February 7th.
It's also likely the Postal Service already has a design or two ready to go....for
Reagan as well as our other living former presidents....just in case there isn't much
time between their deaths and that next birthday.
The custom of waiting started with the shocking death of J-F-K, which caught everyone,
including the post office, by surprise.
Meanwhile, other countries aren't likely to wait... especially those that cater to
American pop culture memorabilia collectors.
And that's Stamp Collecting this week.
I'm Lloyd de Vries, CBS News.
