Preparing for D-Day
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
Stamp collectors have a number of options to commemorate the 60th anniversary of D-Day, the
Allied invasion of France during World War Two. Canada and France both are issuing stamps.
Canada's features a painting by a war artist who came ashore with the Dominion's 15-thousand
troops. The French design is more stylized, and shows a civilian woman reaching out to a
soldier coming ashore.
The U-S is NOT issuing a stamp....but a number of post offices may have special pictorial
postmarks. Or collectors may just opt for the regular hand cancels from towns with appropriate
names, such as Normandy Beach, New Jersey or Juno Beach, Florida. The new World War Two
Veterans Memorial stamp would be appropriate for the envelopes that collectors might
prepare.
The Postal Bulletin, on the postal service Web site, should list some of the special
cancellations. You have 30 days from D-Day to submit your envelopes.
And that's Stamp Collecting this week.
