July 29-30, 2000:
Why do we start collecting stamps?
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
Philatelic organizations and postal services are spending
thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours of effort
trying to interest children in stamp collecting, but
former assistant postmaster general Gordon Morison says
most adult stamp collectors were introduced to the hobby
not through group programs but one-on-one.
"You'll find that there was one person who started them
in the hobby, as opposed to a group start."

Morison, now a vice president of the American Philatelic
Society, says it's not always a parent, but sometimes a
teacher or a friend.
"In my case, it was a lady who was at the end of my paper
route."

In fact, the children of really dedicated stamp collectors
may be at a disadvantage, Morison says.
"The serious collector perhaps is TOO serious with his hobby
and therefore does not let the youngster go his own way or
let the youngster actually follow by example."

Morison's advice? Lighten up if you want your kids to become
stamp collectors.
And that's stamp collecting this week.
