August 5-6, 2000:
Using exciting stamps on your mail
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
Recently, I had to ship my exhibit to a stamp show, and it
cost 24 dollars via Express Mail. Why Express Mail? It comes
with automatic postal insurance, it's tracked, and it keeps
my exhibit in transit as little as possible.
Anyway, some folks at the virtual-stamp-club-dot-com were
giving me a hard time because I normally don't use stamps
for such an expensive package. There are some new high-value
stamps, however, that would make adding up to 24 dollars a
breeze...so I stopped by a postal store, bought some stamps,
and USED them.
It was fun. Some of the new stamps are holograms, and round,
square or pentagonal.
The only glitch was when I took the box up to the mailing
counter to be weighed and priced. The clerk not only couldn't
believe I didn't want her to zip off a postage meter label for
the package....but she needed help clearing her machine after
I left without buying the label.
Hey, SOMEbody's got to use these new stamps!
And that's stamp collecting this week.
I'm Lloyd de Vries, CBS News.
