Stamp Thefts


The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.


This year, there have been a number of big-money thefts 
from stamp dealers on their way home from shows.  Most of 
the loot has been classic U-S stamps, left in locked car 
trunks, out of sight, while the dealers ate in a 
restaurant or stayed overnight at a motel.


They've occurred in different parts of the country. The 
dealers believe they were followed -- how else to explain 
that the break-ins occurred several hours later and in 
another state?


Another theft occurred in a package shipped via an express 
delivery company. The package arrived, but not the 
25-thousand dollars in stamps that were inside.


There's no easy answer to the problem of auto and truck 
break-ins on the way home from shows, but there are some 
precautions all of us can take when shipping stamps: Don't 
use the word "stamps" anywhere on the package, including 
the return address. Insure the shipment, and require that 
the recipient actually signs for it.


There is SOME good news in all this: If no one was 
interested in stamps any more....there wouldn't be any 
reason to steal them.
