May 22-23, 1999:
Sugar-coating History?
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries
You've got about another week to vote for the subjects you
think should be on the U-S stamps celebrating the 1990s.
On the web or with a ballot at your post office, you're
offered 30 choices...but not the Impeachment.
*Right or wrong, whatever you want to say, it's big news,
and it's certainly one of the most memorable events of
the 1990s.*
RUNS: :06
John Dunn is publisher of Mekeel's and Stamps Magazine.
He says -- tongue in cheek -- that if you want to commemorate
the impeachment, there ARE some possibilities.
*For example, Active Older Americans, but I thought Xtreme
Sports was even more appropriate.*
RUNS: :04
Dunn says he's not surprised controversial subjects like
the impeachment aren't on the ballot. The O-J Simpson trial
isn't there, either, or the Chicago Bulls, who dominated
pro basketball. But Coffee, Junior Golf, and Return to Space
are.
The Celebrate the Century stamp program is supposed to be
educational, with kits going to thousands of schools, but
without the Impeachment...
*What are you teaching them? That it wasn't an important
subject?*
RUNS: :03
And that's Stamp Collecting this week.
I'm Lloyd de Vries, CBS News.
