The Beauty of the Desert


The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.


This Tuesday, the U-S issues the first of its 
"Nature of America" stamps, for the Sonoran Desert in 
Arizona.


It's a souvenir sheet of ten stamps, which means the 
stamps make up a larger design -- in this case, a 
panorama of the desert, featuring 25 examples of plants, 
animals and birds found there. The stamps come in two 
sizes, and each stamp will pay first class postage. 
Together, they make a beautiful picture.


The stamps from these sheets aren't found on regular 
mail very often -- witness the Prehistorical Animals 
of two years ago or the on-going Celebrate the Century 
series, where the stamps are hard to remove from the
sheets because they're in the middle of the sheets. But 
those were also GUMMED stamps -- Lick 'n Stick -- while 
the Sonoran Desert stamps have an advantage: They're 
self-adhesives, which non-collector mailers prefer, and
that also should make them easier to remove and put on 
envelopes.


I hope they are. You just have to know to ask for them.
