March 27-28, 1999:
Influence.
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
This past week, two Democratic Members of Congress -- Nick
Lampson of Texas and Ronnie Shows of Mississippi -- announced
they'd like the U-S to issue a Purple Heart stamp -- this
year. Although the Postal Service is always popping up with
surprise additions to the stamp program, it's sort of late to
propose a stamp subject now. Still, these ARE Members of
Congress...although neither is on a committee that governs
the Postal Service.
By the way, in 1982, the U-S issued a Purple Heart envelope.
The Postal Service is trying to influence you by sending a
special train around the country, advertising its Celebrate
the Century stamps. The train is bright yellow, and includes
a 70-year-old Railway Post Office car, displays and the
inevitable gift shop. The outside of the Amtrak locomotive
is decorated with blow-ups of the stamps, which mark important
people and events of the 20th Century.
This weekend, the train is in Ocala, Florida; next weekend,
Jacksonville.
And that's Stamp Collecting this week.
