October 10-11, 1998:
A big shake-up in stamp publishing.
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries
Amos Press, which publishes Linn's Stamp News, the Scott
catalogues and more, announced this past week that it's
interested in selling almost all its operations: daily and
weekly newspapers, and publications for stamps, coins and
classic cars.
Linn's is a weekly paper with more than 60-thousand readers,
or three times that of its nearest competitor. Scott
Publishing's books are THE stamp catalogues in this country.
In fact, the Scott stamp numbering system is so standard
that a competitor used them, arguing that it's all but
public domain.
Of course, Amos Press sued Krause Publications, the
competitor. The two sides were near settlement. Now,
Krause would appear to be the likeliest buyer for at least
the hobby publications of Amos Press. Krause ALSO publishes
stamp and coin newspapers, but also magazines for many
other collectibles, and, overall, it's a much bigger company.
And if Krause doesn't buy them...what will happen to Linn's
and Scott?
And that's stamp collecting this week.
