An Old-Fashioned Scam Comes To Stamp Collecting

With all the attention paid these days to Internet scams and identity theft, it’s
important to remember that the non-tech frauds are still out there.

Someone is using the name of a well-known stamp collector in a confidence scheme.

Stamp collectors are contacted and told that this man — a prolific writer whose name
they recognize — needs some help in selling a collection. They’re asked to pay out a
large sum of money, to help the well-known collector acquire and sell the stamps.

Of course, there is no such collection, and the advance money disappears, along with
the fraudsters. Except for the cachet of stamp collecting, it’s one of the most basic
fraud schemes.

The stamp celebrity whose name is taken in vain is not involved in buying and selling
collections.

If you’re offered this “deal,” say no thanks, and contact the American Philatelic
Society, the nation’s major collectors’ organization, at stamps-dot-org under “services.”
