The Great War
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
Britain is issuing a set of six stamps and other products to commemorate the centennial
of the start of World War One. Known as the War To End All Wars, it reshaped Europe and
the Middle East… and confirmed the United States as a world power.
So where are the U-S stamps for this anniversary?
Probably still on the drawing board. The United States didn’t enter the war until 1917…
so there is no significant anniversary for the U-S for another three years.
But even then, we may not see U-S stamps for it. There were none 50 years ago. World
War One was not a popular war among Americans. And, unlike World War Two or any
subsequent conflicts, there are no veterans still living for us to honor by commemorating
the war.
We do get an occasional stamp, though, for veterans released on Veterans Day — the
anniversary of the armistice that ended World War One.
