The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
The five-year Civil War was a critical event in U-S history, and the Postal Service is
commemorating the 150th anniversary of the conflict with two stamps each year. This
year's mark the battles of Vicksburg and Gettysburg — major turning points of the war.
The stamps are being issued in special sheets of 12. On one side are ten stamps, 5 of
each. On the other are two more, plus a Matthew Brady photo of Confederate prisoners
taken at Gettysburg.
Pembroke Virginia barber Clate Dollinger spotted a poster promoting this "souvenir sheet"
in his local post office recently, and realized the three rebels were all his relatives.
That's Dollinger's great-grandfather on the far right.
They're carrying extra blankets, Dollinger says, because they knew they were heading to
a Prisoner of War camp in Delaware. And when the war ended, it took them FOUR MONTHS to
walk home.
