Showcasing the Postal System

The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.

The National Postal Museum in Washington is one of the smaller facilities in the 
Smithsonian Institution.

"We get 400-thousand people go through here. Some of the bigger ones get about 10 million,
but they're the biggest in the world." :05

But museum director Allen Kane says it has other strengths.

"We do real well in online visitors, we get about 3 million at this point, but we do have 
the second largest collection in the Smithsonian, and the second most valuable 
collection." :09

The National Postal Museum doesn't just sit back and record history, it helps make it. The 
secret?

"I have a great staff, and I have a lot of great volunteers (:04). It's not me, it's all 
the people that surround this thing. And there's a tremendous passion in this hobby. It's 
the most passionate place I've ever seen, stamp collecting." :11

The Museum recently received a gift of 8 million dollars from financier Bill Gross for a 
new gallery, which will (expand the museum onto a second floor and ) allow it to display 
more of its rare stamps, right across from Washington's Union Station.

"I think this is the biggest thing we can do to help stamp collecting." :04 // "You'll 
see that it will be the focal point for stamp collecting, and it'll raise the visibility 
and brand image of stamp collecting." :06
