Commemoration Forever
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
The U-S Postal Service has filed for permission to issue new designs for Forever stamps.
Those are the stamps that pay the first-class letter rate whenever you use them, no matter
how high rates go after you buy them.
So far, there's been only one Forever Stamp design -- the Liberty Bell. But these stamps
are far and away the best sellers at your post office -- so much so that first-class rate
commemorative stamps are getting squeezed out. The public doesn't buy them, and many postal
clerks don't stock them.
Commemoratives are issued to note historic events, important people, causes and programs.
Now, when rates change, those stamps don't get used.
The word that there could be other Forever designs has stamp collectors excited. They hope
it means Forever COMMEMORATIVES, which would see more use on the mail. Other major
countries have been doing that for years.
But it might only result in more GENERIC patriotic designs, like the Statue of Liberty or
the flag.
