Maybe I'm a traditionalist, but I look at U-S stamps such as Star Wars and Hershey's Kisses 
and I start to grumble about too much commercialism and pop culture. Oh, sure, the U-S stamp 
program has always had political cronies and favorite causes in it, but...

I'm not the only one:

"When I see -- and I hope I don't offend anybody -- Bugs Bunny stamps or Elmer Fudd stamps, 
I think it's a wasted opportunity"

Then, recently, the Postal Service announced its DEFINITIVES, the new stamps for the new 
postal rates -- stamps that stay in post offices year after year, and I said, aha! THIS is 
what a stamp program should be.

They include The first woman to serve in both the House and Senate, Margaret Chase 
Smith...author Harriet Beecher Stowe...Air Force One....North American flora and fauna...and, 
as always, the American flag.

Not bad.
