No commoner has appeared more often on Danish stamps than Hans Christian Andersen, and four
more stamps were added last month to mark his bicentennial.
Other countries are issuing stamps, too.
After trying his hand as an actor, Andersen wrote plays and poems before publishing his first
book of tales for children. It soon became popular not only in Denmark, but throughout Europe
and North America.
One of the stamps shows a portrait of Andersen, based on a photograph -- one of the many new
inventions which fascinated him. Another illustrates his writing, while a third celebrates
his talent at cutting paper into artistic designs. The fourth shows a drawing he made while
staying in Italy.
Andersen's stories, such as "The Ugly Duckling," "The Princess And The Pea," and "The Little
Mermaid" are still popular today. Some of them were the basis for a Danny Kaye movie fifty
years ago, with songs by Frank Loesser...
