Engraved in our hearts.

The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries. 

Most postage stamps these days are full-color offset, like labels or stickers, but for 
many collectors, nothing beats an engraved stamp. And the best are stamps printed from 
engravings by Czeslaw Slania ... who died recently at the age of eighty-three.

Stamp collectors even have a Czeslaw Slania Study Group. When he appeared at stamp shows 
in the U-S, his stand was always crowded with fans, even though he was quiet and spoke 
little English.

Born in Poland, Slania had lived in Sweden for nearly fifty years, working for most of 
that time for the Swedish post office. However, he also engraved stamps for more than 
thirty other countries, including the United States, as well as some currency. The subjects 
ranged from Elvis to waterfowl. His one-thousandth stamp was issued five years ago, while 
his most recent U-S stamp was for the Nobel Prize anniversary in Two Thousand One.

Slania's last stamps were issued in February, by the United Nations.
