Getting Wisdom
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
"Wisdom," in this case, is part of a mural on the outside of the General
Electric Building in New York City -- also known as 30 Rockefeller Plaza <or
"30 Rock">. That's the home of N-B-C.
The vignette will be featured on a new one dollar stamp being issued at the
end of the month at a major stamp show in Biloxi, Mississippi. There's
actually a use for a one-dollar stamp: That plus a few of the one-cent
Tiffany Lamp stamps also being issued at the show, and you can mail 'most
any large envelope.
What's interesting, though, is that this is the third recent regular issue
stamp to feature a New York City landmark, in an art-deco style.
Commemorative stamps come and go, but regular issues are intended to serve
for a number of years.
The others are the ten-cent Atlas Statue, also at Rockefeller Center, and
the ten-cent Lion outside the New York Public Library.
A Postal Service official tells me that, no, it's not intended to be a New
York City tribute. It's just coincidence.
And that's stamp collecting this week.
