Powered Flight Finally Takes Off
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
This year marks the one hundredth anniversary of the Wright Brothers flight,
and you'd think issuing a stamp would be easy...but it wasn't. The Postal
Service has run into all sorts of problems.
First was the anniversary date itself: Orville Wright took off on December
17th...much later in the year than the Postal Services like to issue stamps.
Second was the location. The flight occurred in North Carolina, but
organizers of the big anniversary events there reportedly said they didn't
want the stamp issued then and there: It will be too crowded with too much
else going on.
So, at first, the stamp was going to be issued at an air show in the Norfolk
area...but that event ran out of money and was grounded.
So now the stamp is scheduled for May 22nd in Dayton, at the Air Force
Museum, and in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, and possibly Kitty Hawk.
No doubt there also will be special postmarks available in December.
And that's stamp collecting this week.
I'm Lloyd de Vries, CBS News.
