Postage Stamp Powerhouse


The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.


Who produces the most postage stamps?


Well, if you said some country in the Caribbean or Africa, you're close:
It's Inter-Governmental Philatelic Corporation, which represents countries
like Grenada, Ghana, and Tuvalu .


"Some people say we do about half the stamps in the world"

Sam Malamud is president of I-G-P-C in New York.


"Our stamps are probably the most popular worldwide, not only in the
quantity, but also in the thematics that we put on the stamps."

Many of the stamp subjects involve pop culture -- Elvis, Princess Diana, or
butterflies -- but not all. Some of the stamps note famous anniversaries,
such as next year's centennial of the Wright Brothers' powered flight.


Malamud also sells stamps, and wants his clients to issue stamps that sell.
The countries want to present a positive message.


"We sit down with our stamp committees, and we give them the advice, and we
throw back and forth. As long as it's not controversial and...will send a
bad message to the children."
