November 4-5, 2000:
The secret stamp catalogue.
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
The Postal Service's own Guide To U-S Stamps, for casual
collectors, may be the BEST stamp catalogue on the market:
It's the only one printed in color, and costs much less than
the standard U-S catalogue.
Yet it's been hard to get a copy.
It was supposed to be available in practically every post
office, <starting in early November>....yet it often
wasn't there. And publicity? Forget about it.
That should change with the new 27th edition: It's now
published for the Postal Service by Harper-Collins, a major
book company, and it's going to be sold in regular
bookstores as well as post offices.
Throughout the book, there are interesting stories about
some of the stamps, as well as an index of U-S stamps by
subject, lists of stamp organizations, publishers, and post
offices with philatelic windows, and "how-to" articles. And,
yes, stamp values are given.
The Postal Service Guide to U-S Stamps is twenty dollars,
and now, if your post office doesn't have it, go to a
bookstore.
And that's stamp collecting this week.
