December 11-12, 1999:
Buy a stamp, win a car.
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
A souvenir sheet issued by San Marino last month included
a coupon that can be used to enter a sweepstakes.
According to LINN'S STAMP NEWS, the prize being offered
is an Audi A-3 hatchback. The tiny country did something
similar for a Volkswagen Beetle two years ago.
Souvenir sheets are small sheets of several stamps. The
San Marino souvenir sheet has four stamps depicting
various Audis through the years. San Marino is the world's
smallest republic, about a tenth the size of New York
City, and surrounded entirely by Italy.
The Audi souvenir sheet is shown on the LINN'S web site --
LINN'S is spelled L-I-N-N-S.
You have to buy the souvenir sheet in order to enter,
because only the official coupon will be accepted. Only
210-thousand of them were printed, and each costs just
over three U-S dollars. The drawing is next October.
But don't get too excited: Even if you win, you might
not be allowed to bring this model into the U-S.
And that's stamp collecting this week.
