The Smiley Face is in, Watergate is out

The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries

The Postal Service this past week announced the subjects we
chose for the Celebrate the Century 1970s stamps: The top
vote-getter was the Smiley Face.

Only two of the nominees from Arts and Entertainment made
the cut, and both were television programs: "Sesame Street"
and "All in the Family." The epic miniseries "Roots" didn't
make it, nor did "The Godfather."

And news events? Forget it. The minimum two from that
category were chosen -- Earth Day and the Bicentennial --
but not Watergate, the opening of China and the
Oil Shortage.

The sports winners were "Monday Night Football," the
Pittsburgh Steelers and the racehorse Secretariat...
but the losers were tennis, pro soccer and the Oakland A's.
Maybe if the A's had had a better September...

Lifestyles was an interesting topic. In voting during the
month of September, we picked the Smiley Face, Disco and
fashion....but not jogging or -- got your ears on,
good buddy? -- C-B Radio.

And that's stamp collecting this week.

I'm Lloyd de Vries, CBS News.
