A Passion for Pests
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
Topical stamp collecting concentrates on the subjects of the stamps, and topical
collections cover a wide range, everything from birds to ships to...
“a celebration of the cockroach.” RUNS :02
Jean Stout of Jackson, Mississippi, is best known for collecting penguins on stamps.
Some of her friends challenged her to try a new subject, and she chose cockroaches.
“They just fell out. They said, oh, you can’t do an exhibit on cockroaches. There’s
not enough stamps out there.” RUNS :07
Admittedly, the stamps are from small countries that issue stamps solely to make
money — what collectors call “sand dune countries.”
“You’re not going to find them from Great Britain and the United States and Canada.”
RUNS :04
Cockroaches are found nearly everywhere in the world.
“The early explorers were the ones that helped spread the cockroaches.” RUNS :08
“Did you know a lot about cockroaches before you started this exhibit?”
“Just that I didn’t like ‘em (laughs) RUNS :06
After all, stamp collecting can be fun.
