Dealing with dealers
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
There are several U-S organizations for stamp dealers, but by far the largest is the
AMERICAN Stamp Dealers Association. It produces some of the largest stamp collecting
shows in the country. New executive director Dana Guyer, however, says she’s also
focusing now on services to its members.
“Maybe helping them with advertising, helping them, you know, market themselves
better.” RUNS :05
One way to do that, she says, is working with major stamp shows.
“Sending out e-blasts to people, saying ‘Hey, look, our members are at these shows,
why don‘t you stop in and see them if you’re in those areas?’” RUNS :06
While many people want to encourage more children to collect, Guyer proposes a different
area for recruitment.
“We need to look at the, say, 45-year-olds and up, where their kids are graduated now,
or they have more expendable income, or they can actually start their collections again,
because they’ve probably collected before, or get into the hobby somehow.” RUNS :14
Because, Guyer says, stamp collectors have always been older.
