Studying the topics
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
One of the most popular ways to collect stamps is by topic.
“Collecting not by nation or by type of issue like special delivery or airmail, but by
topic or theme, like horses, cats, dogs” :09
Jack Denys is president of the American Topical Association, the overall group for
topical collecting.
But for many subjects, there is a smaller organization – an A-T-A Study Unit.
Some of the newer groups are rather interesting.
One is for autos. You’d think cars would be a given, but there hasn’t been an active
automobiles study unit for 30 years. Now a collector who specializes in air-cooled
Volkswagens on stamps — yes, you can get very specific — is trying to restart it.
Another new study unit is Halloween on stamps. Formed earlier this year, it’s taking off
faster than a broomstick. Trick or treat!
There are more than 50 American Topical Association study units. There’s a list on the
A-T-A website: American-topical-A-S-S-N-dot- org. You can be in a study unit without
joining the main organization, but then you won’t hear about new groups and the wider
world of topicals.
