Fifty years ago, the musical “Fiddler On The Roof” opened on Broadway. Based on the
stories of Sholom Aleichem, it told of Jews in Eastern Europe in the early 1900s making
the transition into the 20th Century.

“Fiddler” was a big hit here in the U-S and throughout the world... as was the movie in
1971.

Now Israel is marking the anniversary of the blockbuster show with three stamps. They
show sketches of Tevye, the main character… which were drawn by Israeli actor Topol, who
played Tevye in the movie and in the first London stage production.

There have been four Broadway revivals of Fiddler…one starring Topol, in fact, and
productions in Hebrew, Yiddish, Dutch… even Japanese!
