The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
We now have confirmation there will be Harry Potter stamps issued by the U-S on
November 19th. But there’s still much we don’t know: How many stamps? What will they
show? First-class rates or something more?
The latest word from the Postal Service adds to the confusion: The stamps will only go
on sale at the central fulfillment site and at selected “premier” post offices. The
other 35-thousand or so offices won’t get the stamps for at least another month.
Can you imagine a customer waiting on a long holiday line to buy these stamps for their
children or grand-children....only to be told THAT post office won’t have them because
it’s not important enough?
This Harry Potter issue has been messed up for months, from a premature announcement to
what I was told was a hassle over celebrity rights issues. The stamps, I’m told,
celebrate the MOVIES, not the books.... which opens another can of worms, because as far
as I know, only one of the principal actors isn’t still alive. Oh, and they’re all British.
by the way, November 19th is the hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the Gettysburg Address, one of the greatest speeches in American history — but there’s no stamp for THAT.
