The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
The U-S this summer honors four baseball players - Joe DiMaggio of the New York Yankees,
Ted Williams of the Boston Red Sox, Larry Doby of the Cleveland Indians and Willie Stargell
of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Sheets will contain all four of these all-stars.
One of the biggest complaints, though, when the Postal Service issues these multi-subject
sets, is that some people want only ONE of the stamps, not all four. But you have to buy
the whole thing, or nothing.
That could be a problem here. New York baseball fans may find it hard to root for Boston's
Splendid Splinter, while those in Beantown may not care where Joltin' Joe has gone. The
same could hold true in Cleveland and Pittsburgh.
So, Linn's Stamp News reports, this time the Postal Service is making an exception. In
addition to the four-subject sheets, it's also producing SINGLE-subject sheets, and
distributing them regionally. You'll find Joltin' Joe in New York, for example, but not
Atlanta. There and other parts of the country will get the four-subject sheets.
The Postal People have only done this once before, and it was also a sports issue: Football
Coaches, 15 years ago.
And if, say, you're a Pirates fan living in exile, don't despair: You'll be able to order
any of the sheets from the national distribution center.
