Reality Check

The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries

Often, knowledgeable stamp collectors try to tell eBay sellers who have ridiculous prices
that their listings are silly -- a million dollars for something worth 20, for example.
And, often, they get nasty replies in return.

So why bother?

Well, first, if you put a piece of junk on eBay with a ridiculous price, you're wasting
your time and, if you paid a listing fee, your money. The Good Samaritans are trying to
help you.

Second, if by some chance another fool actually buys an outrageously priced lot, and then
learns he's been fleeced -- and he will -- he's going to blame the entire hobby. Again,
the knowledgeable collectors are trying to prevent this.

And third, junk listings clutter up eBay, making it hard to find worthwhile offers.

Do yourself a favor before listing stamps on eBay. Take a few minutes to find out what
you have and approximately what it's worth. Chances are your local library has a set of
the Scott Stamp catalogues.
