The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries
There were only half a dozen new U-S commemorative stamps in the first four months of
the year....but FIVE from mid-April to early May. And some of those are the biggest
issues of the year.
In many years, this imbalance is caused by a rate change, and, yes, we DID have one in
mid-April -- but the letter rate didn't change.
So why all these stamps in less than a month? They're tied to the calendar.
The Civil War stamps HAD to come out on April 12th, the 150th anniversary of the first
shot. Anything else would have been silly.
The Go Green ecology set came out a week before Earth Day. The Helen Hayes stamp was
issued as the acting awards named after her were handed out.
The release date for the space stamps is one day before the 50th anniversary of the
first Project Mercury flight.
I'm not aware of any significance to the date for the Gregory Peck stamp. It's probably
just when the Motion Picture Academy and the Peck Family could schedule it.
