The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries
A rare sheet of 10 never-issued German Audrey Hepburn stamps sold at a charity auction
recently for more than 600-thousand dollars.
The design shows the actress as Holly Golightly in "Breakfast at Tiffanys."
Germany printed 14 million of the stamps in 2001 and THEN asked her son Sean Ferrer for
approval. He didn't like the picture, and refused.
The U-S ran into problems with ITS 2003 stamp. Audrey Hepburn's beauty was unique and hard
to capture. The design needed several revisions before it pleased Ferrer.
All the German stamps, except for three sheets, were supposed to have been destroyed, but
other copies have shown up from time to time.
Ferrer decided to sell his sheet for charity, and signed a contract with the German
government that not only gives him permission, but prohibits the Finance Ministry from
selling either of its sheets for another 30 years.
Hepburn was a UNICEF ambassador for the last 5 years of her life. A third of the proceeds
from this sale will benefit UNICEF, and the rest will go to the Audrey Hepburn Children's
Fund.
