[Don't Fence Me In - Autry]

The U-S is honoring four movie actors in a set of stamps it calls "Cowboys of the Silver 
Screen." Two of them -- William S. Hart and Tom Mix -- were silent film stars, but the 
other two -- Gene Autry and Roy Rogers -- were what was known as "SINGING Cowboys."

Their careers were intertwined. Rogers got his first movie lead -- and his name -- when 
he replaced Autry in a 1938 film. Both recorded the Cole Porter song "Don't Fence Me In."

Rogers' more up-tempo version was more popular, probably because he starred in the movie 
of the same name, but every year at Christmas, you hear Autry's biggest hit song on the 
radio.

Autry bought radio and television stations, real estate, and the expansion Los Angeles 
Angels baseball team. Rogers went on to television, where he was a staple of Saturday 
morning television for Baby Boomers.
