Pride and Passion
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
The other day, a non-collector who sometimes observes The Virtual Stamp Club message
board asked me, "Is the national stamp society always this much of a soap opera?" I
thought for a moment, and said, "Yes."
But it's not just that organization. It's ALL of stamp collecting -- and many other
hobbies.
I knew a man once who was banned from coaching in every youth sports league in our
town. A really nice guy -- until the game began.
You see, a job is something you have to do. Only a very few are fortunate enough to
look forward to going to workevery day. But a hobby -- THAT you do because you love it.
And, like your family, you want it to be perfect. You get passionate about the hobby --
and over-wrought when your affection goes unrequited.
So we see silly rants like calling for the Postmaster General to be boiled in oil, or
that all the volunteer leaders of a stamp society be impeached, or, better yet, flogged.
But every so often, I want to grab some of these people by the throat and scream. "IT'S
A HOBBY! IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE FUN!"
And then I take a deep breath, go off by myself and work with my stamps.
