Double or nothing.
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
Just about the only group that makes money from large quantities of current-rate stamps
is the Postal Service. Yet there are always people who buy several sheets of new stamps
and put them away as an investment.
Eventually, these hoards find their way to stamp dealers who sell them at face value or
sometimes EVEN LESS, for use as postage.
Remember the Elvis Presley stamp of 1993? I'm now seeing it for sale as this "discount
postage."
A funny thing happened with 3-cent stamps, though. So many of these stamps from the 40s
and 50s were used for postage 30 or 40 years later that now they're actually hard to find.
They've gone up in value...maybe to 4 or 5 cents.
Right now, the current letter rate is 44 cents. But in the late eighties, it was 22 cents.
Stick two of those stamps on an envelope, and you're covered.
But before you do, check a stamp catalogue at your library: Some stamps ARE worth more.
The Certified Public Accountants stamp is worth at least TWICE face value.
