Come to the Fair

Many stamp collectors have a strong interest in history.

Cheryl Ganz, the chief philatelic curator of the National Postal Museum in Washington, has written a book about the 1933 Chicago World's Fair.

"It explores the people at the fair and the exciting things that they did to make this a great success during the Great Depression." RUNS :07

Her book isn't about stamps.

"But there happens to be one great stamp story in there, because the Graf Zeppelin flew to the fair and there was a special postage stamp issued for that flight." RUNS :08

Although we don't see them as often now, Ganz says World's Fairs like Chicago's left their mark.

"We see Disneyland and Disney World, and those have become, along with Epcot Center, the new world's fairs of this century."

LdeV: "So it has a heritage, even though we don't see something quite like it?"

"There certainly is a continuity to how we have places that offer us an opportunity for fun and education combined."
