Addressing the new rates.
The Stamp Collecting Report. I'm Lloyd de Vries.
The Postal Service has had more time to prepare for the May 12th rate hike than for almost
any increase in the past 40 years, so it will have more stamps than usual ready.
What you WON'T see are those temporary generic stamps without any prices on them.
Instead, when the new rates kick in, your post office should have 42-cent commemoratives --
the American Journalist stamps issued in April. There will also be a postcard at the new
rate, and a stamp for the postcard rate.
There will be stamps for the two- and three-ounce rates, featuring, respectively, novelist
James Michener and Dr. Edward Trudeau, a pioneer in the treatment of tuberculosis.
Trudeau, by the way, is a great-grandfather of Doonesbury cartoonist Garry Trudeau.
The new international rate stamps, which in recent years have shown scenic wonders to
potential foreign tourists, will showcase a New Hampshire river scene and the U-S Virgin
Islands.
But do yourself a favor -- buy some one-cent stamps NOW.
