May the stamps be with you
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
If you thought the Hershey's Kisses one-hundredth-anniversary stamp earlier this year
was too commercial a subject, here's one better: A set of stamps celebrating

the THIRTIETH anniversary of the movie Star Wars.
The Postal Service's own guidelines say no stamps for commercial subjects and only
anniversaries in multiples of fifty years. So much for THEM.
The Postal People aren't saying much about these Star Wars stamps, other than they'll
come out in late May. We've learned there will be fifteen stamps, which will form an
overall design, and they'll be 41 cents each. There's an anniversary celebration in Los
Angeles on the same day, so you can bet on a tie-in there. You've probably already heard
about the R-Two-D-Two mailboxes, so it's part of a larger postal promotion, too.
These won't be the first commemoratives at the new letter rate: That honor goes to the
four-hundredth anniversary of Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement in North
America.
