Six Degrees of Stamp-eration
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
Ever play that game "Six Degrees of Separation?" The premise is that we're all connected
somehow....we know somebody who knows somebody, and...within six levels, voila!
It's especially true of celebrities. And I was reminded of it by the recent Ella Fitzgerald
stamp. She recorded eight "songbooks" of great American composers, such as Cole Porter,
Duke Ellington, Rodgers & Hart....and there are U-S stamps for each of them.
Here's a nice coincidence: Fitzgerald's first recording was titled "Love and Kisses." Three
days after her stamp, there's a new one titled "Love and Kisses."
Or how about Bing Crosby? He was a major influence on the careers of Judy Garland and Hattie
McDaniel, both honored on stamps last year. His stamp was issued a dozen years earlier.
You can form a nice little sub-collection of stamps based on relationships like this. And
finding these connections is a lot of fun.
