Selecting Subjects

The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries. 

Next year's U-S stamps will include subjects as diverse as baseball sluggers, the Amber Alert 
and Judy Garland.

"Our object is in the course of a year's worth of issuances to come up with a varied program 
that reflects America."

John Hotchner is the best-known stamp collector on the Citizen Stamp Advisory Committee.

"What I try to bring to it is an appreciation of what the stamp collector wants."

He's a prolific writer and frequent exhibitor, and being on C-SAC -

"Oh, it's a wonderful job. It's something I never thought I'd have the opportunity to do. It 
was like a lightning strike when it happened, and I have just had a ball doing it."

His favorite stamp while on the panel honored the Peanuts comic strip, and he has no real 
regrets.

"A lot of the votes on the committee are not unanimous and I have certainly not voted for things 
that eventually got issued, but I can't say that there's anything we've issued that I think we 
should not have issued."

Hotchner is a prolific writer and frequent exhibitor. He was named to C-SAC six years ago 
while he was president of the American Philatelic Society, the major stamp collecting 
organization in the U-S, and he's having a blast.

"Oh, it's a wonderful job. It's something I never thought I'd have the opportunity to do. It 
was like a lightning strike when it happened, and I have just had a ball doing it."

His favorite stamp while on the Committee, and one he says he was instrumental in getting 
issued, honored the Peanuts comic strip

"Peanuts brought something new to cartooning that was uniquely American and is now something 
that's seenall over the world."

And he probably had a lot to do with next year's Distinguished American Diplomats, since he 
works for the State Department, but he has no real regrets about ANY of the stamps.
