Fits And Starts
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
This year's U-S stamps program almost seems to be arranged by theme.
The year led off with Important People - singer Marian Anderson and Ronald Reagan. Then there
was a short break, and three floral issues plus one for the Northeast forests.
Another month went by with no new stamps, and then within two weeks, there were six stamps that
might be titled People You Really Should Know More About: writer Robert Penn Warren, lyricist
Yip Harburg and four scientists.
The summer features some multi-subject issues: Disney Celebrations, Hispanic Dances, Aviation,
and Civil Rights. At either end of the summer, like bookmarks, are two movie stars -- Henry
Fonda last month and Greta Garbo in September.
Then, in the fall, come the kids' issues -- The Muppets, Constellations and Holiday Cookies.
It's really just coincidence -- some of the issue dates were determined by the anniversaries of
the subjects. Others, by events like air and auto shows.
And that's Stamp Collecting this week.
I'm Lloyd de Vries, CBS News.
