Stamp One For The Gipper
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
During his acting career, Ronald Reagan was nowhere near as big a stars as Henry Fonda and
Greta Garbo, but, judging from the advance hoopla, he's got them beat as the star of next
year's U-S stamps.
Reagan is being honored, of course, as a former president, while Fonda is going to be on
next year's Legends of Hollywood stamp and Garbo's centennial is being noted with a joint
issue with her native Sweden.
A few days after Election Day, the Postal Service made public the designs of most of next
year's stamps, but held the Reagan design for the following week, with a ceremony at the
presidential library featuring Nancy Reagan. And that's the Two-Thousand-Five stamp people
are talking about.
There were two preliminary designs, says Reagan Foundation chairman Frederick Ryan -- one
serious, one smiling.
"People usually remember Ronald Reagan with a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye
and that's what the stamp shows."
RUNS :06
That choice seems to be a hit.
And that's Stamp Collecting this week.
