Fairy Tales on Stamps
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
Europe is celebrating another royal wedding -- that of Spain's Prince Felipe and
Letizia Ortiz, described as a modern Spanish woman. As with Denmark's royal wedding
earlier this month, the Spanish postal system has issued a stamp to mark the
occasion...a chance for Spaniards to celebrate after a rough year that included the
Madrid train bombings.
Australia is commemorating a different type of fairy tale - the release of the
third Harry Potter movie. The sheet contains 10 stamps, each featuring a different
character as portrayed in the film. I'm not sure of Australia's connection to the
movie, except they like Harry Potter Down Under, too.
At the other end of the spectrum is Canada's upcoming stamp for the 60th anniversary
of D-Day. Of the 15-thousand Canadian soldiers who landed on Juno Beach in Normandy,
a thousand died on that single day. The stamp design is based on a painting by
Orville Fisher, who was a "war artist" who came ashore with the troops.
And that's Stamp Collecting this week.
