Exploring New Territory

The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.

Amid the Disney and Seuss stamps and the other entertainment issues, three stamps that
are exciting stamp collectors this year are the ones planned for the bicentennial of the
Lewis and Clark Expedition. Most stamp collectors -- all collectors, really -- have at
least a little bit of history buff in them, and it helps that many people think these
are among the best designs this year.

Two of them are portraits of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, who explored western
North America in 1804. The larger-than-normal stamps have ornate traditional borders, but
the actual portraits are in full color. These will be issued in a special booklet, with
other pictures and historical information. The third issue is a sheet stamp, and, again,
the frame looks like an old-time stamp, but the picture, again in color, depicts Lewis
and Clark looking out over the countryside.

There will be launch ceremonies in mid-May for these stamps in each of what are now the
11 states the expedition visited.

And that's Stamp Collecting this week.
