The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.


Stamps keep getting more gimmicky, not that that's necessarily bad. We've
had hologram stamps, phonograph-record stamps, personal-photo stamps, stamps
that smell good...and now, stamps that contain part of the subject they're
honoring.


The Rock of Gibraltar is that British dependency's major feature, covering
most of Gibraltar's two-point-three square miles and overlooking the
entrance to the Mediterranean Sea. It's a natural fortress.


Four new stamps show the Rock from four different sides...and each contains
powder drilled from within the huge limestone mass, applied over the
sections of the photographs that show the Rock. It makes the stamps -- which
were issued last weekend -- feel like sandpaper.


The stamp agency says these are the first stamps anywhere to be produced
with actual rock in them...and I doubt anyone will challenge that claim. You

So, stamp collectors can now REALLY get a piece of the rock!
