A Look Ahead
The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
This coming Friday, the Postal Service will tell us most of next year's
stamp subjects....but we already know some of them.
It was announced recently that Thurgood Marshall will be the Black Heritage
subject.
We've been told that a First Powered Flight centennial is all but certain --
did you know the Wright Brothers have an agent now?
Next year is Ohio's bicentennial, and the Buckeye State has been promised a
stamp. The Louisiana Purchase is a good bet, too.
Then there are the continuing series, such as Lunar New Year. 2003 is the
Year of the Sheep, and we ought to be able to have some fun with that!
Other continuing series are American Treasures -- usually crafts of some
kind -- the Nature of America, and Legends of Hollywood. There's a design
ready for John Wayne, but we don't know if he's it.
And we know there will be new Christmas stamps. Last time the Postal Service
tried to skip a year, there was a public outcry -- you'd think the Grinch
robbed the post office.
And that's stamp collecting this week.
I'm Lloyd de Vries, CBS News.
