Late Developing.


The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
 
This Thursday, the Postal Service issues a sheet of 20 classic photographs
on stamps, called "Masters of American Photography." They'll be the first
37-cent commemoratives, coming out two weeks before the rate change.


Each of the stamps honors a great photographer by showing one of his or her
works. The idea started when the family of Ansel Adams pushed for a stamp to
mark the centennial of his birth.


Getting these stamps issued, however, hasn't been easy for the Postal
Service.


Although we were shown a preliminary design last summer, some of the
photographers' estates demanded changes -- different pictures, or different
editing.


The issuance of the stamps was supposed to be tied to a major photography
exhibition at the Smithsonian, but that was put off for a year, so the
Postal People had to scramble for another location. They chose the Museum of
Photographic Arts in San Diego.


The photos featured range from about 18-50 to 1971. The stamps,
appropriately, are in black-and-white.


And that's stamp collecting this week.
