Mystery Mail


The Stamp Collecting Report, I'm Lloyd de Vries.
 
No, it doesn't have anything to do with anthrax. But this past 
week, some collectors have been getting in the mail 
specially-decorated envelopes with the new Greetings From 
America stamps, from an unknown benefactor.


The stamps are all postmarked on the first day the stamps were 
offered for sale, April 4th, but from out-of-the-way places 
like Little America, Wyoming, and Felton, Delaware. The designs -- 
which collectors call "cachets" -- relate to Mount Washington and 
a hotel in New Hampshire. And the stamps used on the gift envelopes 
usually are the states where the recipients live or work. Mine are 
from New Jersey, for example.


The return address reads, simply, "General Delivery, Bretton Woods, 
New Hampshire." There's nothing inside to indicate who's sending 
them, either. Those receiving these "first day covers," as they're 
called range from stamp writers and organization officers to just 
plain folks. 


So far, we can't figure out who's sending them, or why. But thank you.
