Recognizing Heroes

The Stamp Collecting Report,
I'm Lloyd de Vries.

On the six-month anniversary of the September 11th attacks,
President Bush unveiled the design of the upcoming Heroes of
Two Thousand One semi-postal stamp.

A semi-postal costs more than a regular first-class stamp --
45 cents in this case -- with the difference going to charity.

The design shows three firefighters raising the U-S flag over
the rubble of the World Trade Center.

The U-S has never issued stamps honoring living people, and
for the past several decades, said those commemorated must have
been dead 10 years or more. The one exception is presidents
who have died.

The firefighters shown on this stamp attended the White House
ceremony.

Sometimes living people have been used as models for stamps,
but usually with their features changed. Not this case: It's
the famous photograph from a New Jersey newspaper in all its
glory.

What it came down to was...this was the most positive, upbeat
image representing the tragedies of last year.

And that's stamp collecting this week.
